Early Literacy
Early literacy is what children know about reading and writing before they actually learn to read and write. It’s not teaching reading, drilling, or using flashcards. Instead, it’s laying the foundation–through reading, talking, writing, playing, and singing–so that your child has the necessary skills when they’re developmentally ready to read.
1000 Books Before Kindergarten
The Lydia Taft Pratt Library participates in the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program!
How Does It Work?
Read to your baby or toddler every day. The goal is to read 1000 books before your little one starts kindergarten. If you read just one book a night, you will have read 365 books in a year. That’s 730 books in two years and 1095 books in three years!
Keep a record of what you read together (yes, you can repeat books!) and bring it into the library for prizes along the way.
Check out the official 1000 Books Before Kindergarten page for reading logs and suggested book lists. Drop by the library or give us a call for more information.
